Some interesting happenings and highlights this time around:

The number of votes was crazy — much higher than last year.  It’s also interesting to note that the difference between 1 and 2 was nearly 30,000 votes.  I was surprised to hear that even #80 had over 10,000 votes.

There were some weird and annoying TV service interruptions.  The BS Sky channel stop broadcasting midway through for some other schedule program.  Fuji TV got a lot of internet rage because they kept on showing commercials and cutting off member’s speeches.  Fuji TV coverage also switched to commentator coverage rather than showing the election itself.  Definitely, not great coverage this year unfortunately.  Even during the election coverage, news articles about fan rage were already trending on Yahoo News!  I think Kitahara Rie said it best during her speech: “I’m really praying, from the bottom of my heart, that my speech doesn’t get cut off by a commercial.”  That was definitely a laugh-out-loud moment 🙂

A lot of people came up in ranks, but there also a lot of drops.  Suda Akari’s drop out of the senbatsu member listing from #10 to #16 was really surprising.  Shimazaki Haruka gave an refreshingly serious speech and, like previous years, didn’t take any questions from the MCs.

And lastly, Maeda Atsuko’s appearance.  It was very touching.  It would have been more so if they showed the entire thing and didn’t cut it off (oh, Fuji TV).

We’re still processing what just happened, with lots of interesting results.  The most interesting part of any AKB48 election results is usually the top 16 members, but it is always nice to see who is up and coming in the lower ranks as well.
