Do you have a collection of AKB photos? Or perhaps a collecting habit to begin with? One idol wota struggles with the collector’s dilemma: he has thousands upon thousands of AKB photos, and wonders what it all meant. Join Japanese netizens as they chime in on this wota’s woes.
Hi there. Welcome to “2chan says.” I will be attempting to translate selected threads from Japanese message board 2chan (aka, 2ch or 2channel), purely for interest and entertainment purposes (and for translation practice). The opinions expressed here belong to the anonymous Japanese internet at large, and do not necessarily reflect the view of akbzine; plus, this page could be riddled with translation errors anyway. Proceed at your own risk, fine reader!
Translation note: the term “nama-jyashin” (生写真), literally means “raw photo”. It has a specific meaning in terms of digital photography, but in idol circles, really just refers to single photos of members which are not part of photo books or other media. In AKB circles, they are distributed with CDs, DVDs, calendars, and other goods. If you are on this site, you probably already know this!
“I have about 5000 ‘nama-jyashin’, and I’ve just realized what a terrible waste of money it all was.”

What should I do…..?
Also, it is not really related, but I also have about 1,000 Yokai Watch medals.
ちなみに全然関係ないけど妖怪メダルも1000枚ぐらいある・・・

Sometimes it is nice just to have physical things left over. In “Stage Fighter” and other social games, well….

I am really surprised that after you have collected 5000 photos, you realize that it is a waste.
Usually if someone has gotten that far, I always thought that they would not really understand the meaning of “waste”.

Don’t worry about it. You are making the economy flow. There some unpatriotic people who choose not to spend money, even if it is for more sensible reasons.

The money you have spent is a sunk cost. You should just be happy with the things that you have now.
You might also feel better knowing that you can profit from the things you sell.

Before they become like the next Morning Musume, you should be quick and sell those. In a few years, they will be worthless.

In the past, I had a single photo that was really valuable. But when I think about it now, doing auctions is kind of annoying. Bringing them to the photo shops is just crazy stupid. Eventually, there was nothing left but to hold on to them.

I had some Cardass cards that I put into plastic pouches and left them for 25 years. When I looked at them again, they were good as new. As long as you do not expose them to ultra violet light, they keep up very well.

I guess there really are people who like to collect useless things, like small toys and cards. It really is a waste of money. At least with games, it doesn’t increase the amount of garbage you have.

I remember there was a wota who collected a lot of Morning Musume photos. He said they were all garbage, and then started to collect AKB photos.
I really thought he had a disease of some sort. That is how addictive these photos can get.

It really depends on what members’ photos you have. If you have some old photos of currently popular members, you will get a good price.

If you look at some of the senbatsu photos, you can get as much as 500 yen for those. With 5,000 photos there’s bound to be some really good ones in there.

In order for something to become valuable over the years, the number of items has to be limited to begin with.
To be perfectly honest, there are so many AKB photos in circulation that, in 30 years time, there will never be any photo that will fetch 10s of thousands of yen.
If you just want to sell them to get rid of things, now is the time to do it.

I am a collector; I do not attend any hand shake events, and just spend my money on obtaining photos.
I also do not have an oshimen, so there really is no end in sight.
But when I look at my folio of photos and think how much I have invested in it all, I have no regrets.
But I have started go to handshake events, and my expenses are crazy! lol.
