Watanabe Mayu 2016 8th Senbatsu speech (English subtitles)

Here is Watanabe Mayu’s speech for the 2nd position from the 2016 AKB48 45th Single 8th Senbatsu Sousenkyo General Election.

AHHHH! So frustrated, really. In the preliminary announcement, I was #1. And two years ago, I had the #1 position and, last year, I couldn’t do it twice in a row and landed at #3. I really came here thinking I would take #1 this year but, unfortunately, I couldn’t do it, so it’s pretty frustrating.

That wall is really high. I really think that no one can overcome it. But, up until this day, the Japanese fans and the fans living overseas came together, and really supported me. During election season, I was so so worried, that I thought I would just run away. It was very tiring. During that time, during handshake events, many fans said to me, “I’ll follow you, so please don’t worry.” Hearing those heartfelt words really lifted my spirits. They gave me courage.

Therefore, I was able to stand on this stage today. Honestly, I think that AKB48 is in a pinch right now. Many senior members are graduating, and I think the current members who here can’t cover everything we need to do. The senior members created this AKB48 for us, and I don’t want to see it end as it is right now.

From here on out, I hope that this AKB48, 48-group will continue to by loved for decades to come. For myself, this group has taught me so much. To all the staff that supports us, and with great feelings of thanks to all the fans for their kind words, and for the future of AKB48, I want to contribute much more for the sake of this group.

There’s something I want to tell to all my junior members. I joined AKB48 when I passed the audition at age 12. It’s been 10 years since then. I have sacrificed everything, and given my teenage years all to AKB.

This scenery that you can see now, don’t take it for granted. You might not be able to see the same scene forever. So I hope that you’ll never forget to be thankful for being in this environment, and being supported each day by all of your fans. Right now is just one moment, and I hope that you’ll continue each day without regrets, that you’ll always work hard, as you move forward.

As an AKB48 member, with responsibility and pride, I hope to continue each day diligently. Everyone, thank you very much!
