Here is Ogino Yuka’s speech for the #5 position from the 2017 AKB48 49th Single 9th Senbatsu Sousenkyo General Election.

私は小学校6年生の頃からAKB48グループに憧れ続けてきました。4年間ずっとオーディションを受けてきました。ずっと落選が続き、48グループは憧れのまま終わってしまうのではないか、そう諦めかけていました。そんな時にドラフト会議というものに参加しました。
I’ve been obsessed with the AKB48 group since I was in 6th grade. For four years I went to the auditions. I kept failing, and I began to think that maybe it wouldn’t become more than an obsession. Then, I participated in the Draft Meeting audition.

北原里英さん、柏木由紀さん、そして支配人の今村さん、私をNGT48に選んでくれました。一人暮らしで不安もありましたが、新潟県へ期待を寄せて引っ越してきました。家族も皆すごく不安だったと思います。
Kitahara Rie, Kashiwagi Yuki, and Manager Imamura chose me to be part of NGT48. Although I was worried about living alone, I made the move to Niigata. I think my family was also very worried about me.

でも新潟へ来て、本当に良かったなって今すごく思います。
But, now, I’m really glad that I came to Niigata.

私は落ちこぼれでした。夢は絶対に叶わない、努力は必ず報われる、そんなの嘘にきまっている、ずっとそう思っていました。でもこの4年間、どうしてもAKB48グループに入りたくてずっと一生懸命オーディションに参加しました。
I felt like unwanted leftovers. Dreams never come true. For a long time, I thought that “Hard work will always be rewarded”, was a complete lie. But for four years, because I wanted so badly to be part of AKB48, I tried my hardest in all the auditions.

そして速報で1位という順位をもらった時は本当にびっくりしたし、誰もが「荻野由佳って誰？」「何でこの人なの？」って思ったと思います。私自身もすごく驚きました。AKB48の総選挙を私が壊してしまったのかなと思った時もありました。
I was so surprised when I came up #1 in the preliminary vote count. I think a lot of people were thinking, “Who’s Ogino Yuka? Why her?” I was personally very surprised. I wondered if I had somehow broken this election.

それでも皆さんから頂いた愛だと思ってがっしりと離さずに受け止めていました。
But now I’ve been able to accept all the love that you’ve given me.

いま憧れていたAKBグループの総選挙でこんなに素敵な順位をいただけるとは思ってもいなくて、夢のようです。今まで諦めずにAKBグループのオーディションを受けてきてよかったなと思いますし、応援してくれるみなさんがいてくれて本当に良かったなと思います。
I never thought that within this group, which I had loved, that I would achieve such a rank. It’s like a dream. For those four years, I’m really glad that I didn’t give up during all of those auditions. And I’m glad you were all there for me.

高橋みなみさんに「努力は必ず報われますか？」と聞きました。「努力は必ず報われるかは分からないけど、努力をして意味のないことはない」と言われました。
I once asked Takahashi Minami, “Does hard work really pay off?” She said to me,”I don’t know if hard work will always be rewarded, but that doesn’t mean working hard is meaningless.”

そして「おぎゆかが努力は必ず報われる、と証明してね」と言われました。私は「努力は必ず報われる」をいま証明できていますか？
Then she said, “If Ogiyuka works hard, she’ll definitely be rewarded. Please prove that to me, okay?” Have I proven that hard work will always be rewarded?

きっとこの中にも目標があってたどり着けなくて、挫折を経験している方もいると思います。
I think there are many people here who haven’t reached their goals and have encountered roadblocks.

そんな方にも私のキャッチフレーズである「何があってもへこたれない」を皆さんの心にも言い聞かせてほしいと思います。
To these people, I hope you’ll remember part of my catch phrase: “No matter what happens, don’t lose heart.”

本当に本当にいつも応援してくれる皆さんのおかげです。無名の私をここまで追い上げてくれてありがとうございます。
Truly, this is all thanks to the support of the fans. Thank you for lifting up a nobody like me.

そして私をアイドルにしてくれてありがとうございました。この結果を踏まえてデビューして2年目のNGT48にもつなげたいし、恐縮ですが、AKBグループのためにも頑張りたいし、頑張らせて欲しいです。
Also, thank you for making me an idol. With this result in hand, I want to continue onward with my 2nd year in NGT48. With gratitude, I want to work hard for this group, and I hope you’ll hold me to that standard.

私に任せたと言ってもらえるような存在になるのはまだまだ遠いと思いますが、一生懸命これからも頑張りますので是非応援をお願いします。
